Description: The IDS Center supplanted the Foshay Tower as the tallest building in the Twin Cities when it opened in 1973—a position it has not relinquished. The IDS Center is arguably the most well-known building in the Twin Cities and is recognized as the centerpiece of the Minneapolis skyline. Seen from downtown Minneapolis and even the suburbs, the IDS Center looms large. The IDS Center distinguishes itself in several other ways. The 57-story, 792-foot structure has more than 42,000 panes of glass as well as a 105-foot waterfall, which was added during the 1998 renovation. Designed by world-renowned architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee, the skyscraper has frequently attracted national attention. The grandeur of the Crystal Court, named one of America’s top 500 architectural landmarks by historian G. E. Kidder Smith, was featured in the Mary Tyler Moore Show and two motion pictures.
