Description: Most often referred to simply as “the Post,” the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is the only daily in town. It also publishes the Suburban Journals twice a week, with stories of special interest devoted to different sections of the metro area. Considered too liberal by conservatives and too conservative by liberals, the Post, part of Lee Enterprises, occupies a precarious position within the community. Staff members of the Post-Dispatch produce a reasonably accurate report of regional, national, and international news. Sections of the paper include the Main News, or the “front section,” which is news of the nation, the world, and high-profile regional stories. Main News is responsible for national and international coverage and oversees the Post-Dispatch’s Washington Bureau. Metro News includes local and regional coverage, including the St. Louis region as well as Missouri and Illinois. The department has offices in the city of St. Louis, St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Jefferson County, and Jefferson City in Missouri, and in Madison and St. Clair Counties and the city of Springfield in Illinois. Metro News bureaus include the St. Charles, Jefferson County, North and South St. Louis County, Clayton, and Jefferson City bureaus in Missouri, and in Belleville, Edwardsville, Springfield, and the Illinois State House in Illinois. The Features section includes stories found in the Everyday, Arts & Entertainment (A&E), Get Out, Let’s Eat, Travel, StyleWest, and Lifestyle sections. The Features department’s work includes everything from the comics and movies to television and recipes, as well as the fine arts and fashion—plus everything in between. The Business section covers local, national, and international business news, as well as news that affects the pocketbooks of the region. Post-Dispatch sports staff members cover professional, collegiate, prep, and amateur sports competitions, highlighting the activities of all local pro and semipro teams. The online news department provides stories for the paper’s Internet site, www.stltoday.com, which is updated as events occur throughout the day. The Web site receives news updates from the Post-Dispatch reporters, the Associated Press, and other wire services to keep online visitors up-to-date with the latest information of interest to the St. Louis area. They also monitor online discussions of sports and news topics in their various blogs and reader forums. The daily circulation rate is more than 278,000, and approximately 407,000 on Sunday. Daily subscriptions are about $3 a week, and the newsstand price is 50 cents (weekdays) and $1.25 (Sunday).
