Description: Owned and operated by Martha and John Garner, the Dockery House is situated on three acres amid pecan trees, meadows, and a pond. Not too far from downtown Memphis but well away from the hustle and bustle, the Dockery House has two rooms and one suite in a restored 1876 farmhouse, all of them nicely appointed with luxury baths, hand silk-screened wallpaper, and a TV and VCR. The loft room also offers a washer and dryer along with a full kitchen. Dockery House serves a full country breakfast, too. A deposit is required on all reservations, and a 48-hour notice of cancellation is required to receive a full deposit refund. Children and pets are welcome.

2. Magnolia Grove Bed & Breakfast

Description: The Magnolia Grove, only a 30-minute drive from Memphis, provides guests with an escape from modern city life. This bed-and-breakfast inn, housed in a turn-of-the-20th-century plantation home, is beautifully appointed, complete with antiques, chandeliers, and stained-glass windows. Upon arrival guests are treated to homemade desserts; a full breakfast is served each morning. Three guest rooms are individually decorated with period antiques and a queen-size bed, and all of them have a private bath. Keep in mind there’s a 72-hour cancellation policy, so if you cancel within 72 hours of your scheduled arrival, you will be responsible for the cost of one night’s stay unless they are able to rebook the room.

Description: The Sassafras Inn promises a romantic getaway for couples, complete with prettily decorated rooms, a heart-shape swimming pool, and a hot tub. It’s a getaway from the city as well, situated south of Memphis in Hernando, Mississippi. Each room has a queen-size bed, a private bath, and a TV with VCR and a DVD player. Ask about the Heart’s Content Cottage. Guests get a full breakfast, which they can opt to enjoy in their rooms, in the dining room, or by the pool. No children or pets are permitted, and smoking is allowed only in a designated area. Be aware that the Sassafras has the following policy: “In keeping with the high standards of a Christian Bed and Breakfast, no unmarried couples or public drinking.” It also has a seven-day cancellation policy.

4. Timbeaux’S On The Square

Description: This friendly small-town restaurant calls itself a Cajun steak house. Here you’ll find a diverse crowd of diners ranging from families with children to high rollers on their way to the casinos. It’s a pleasant restaurant with exposed brick walls and plantation shutters, but more important, the food is great. Timbeaux’s fish stew, seared sea scallops, and orange and avocado salad are standouts at dinner. There’s a wine list, and the bar often features special cocktails made from watermelon or other fresh fruits. Timbeaux’s is usually packed on the weekends but you can call or go online to make reservations, or just call ahead to get on the waiting list. Open for dinner Monday through Saturday.
