Description: As a land-grant university, N.C. State defines part of its mission as the promotion of the creation of objects that are both useful and attractive. The Gregg Museum helps fulfill this mission with its collections of textiles, ceramics, architectural drawings, photography, modern furniture, and outsider art. The museum was born of a need to support State’s renowned School of Design, but its scope has grown in the past four decades to include the works of other university departments as well. Emphasis is on North Carolina artists and craftsmen and N.C. State alumni and faculty. The museum stages between six and eight exhibits annually in the Talley Student Center and in various venues around campus. Admission is free. Recent shows have examined contemporary fiber art, the history of building in North Carolina, the works of individual potters and metalsmiths, and the war photography of an N.C. State alum. Museum-curated examinations of such topics as quilts, Japanese woodblocks, and appliqués have traveled to other museums.
