Description: The permanent collection of the N.C. Central University Art Museum is devoted to the works of African-American artists and others who focus on the African-American experience. This includes artists from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence, as well as contemporary artists including Barkley Hendricks, Geoffrey Holder, and North Carolina native Minnie Evans. Curators create exhibitions to make use of the permanent collection and host occasional touring works. Recent exhibits have included a retrospective of the works of 19th-century still life painter Charles Ethan Porter, an examination of African-American modernism through the work of William H. Johnson, and a look at the career of Gordon Park. Admission to the museum is free, with the exception of occasional special programs.
