Description: Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center offers a slice of scenic Nebraska prairie and some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the area. Preserving Nebraska’s native tallgrass prairie is at the heart of the organization’s mission; and at the education center, visitors can learn why this preservation is important in the first place. Since less than 2 percent of the world’s tallgrass prairie remains intact, the distinctive nature of Nebraska’s native landscape can’t be seen in many other locations. The building itself maximizes solar exposure and is energy efficient and green, using straw-bale construction and low-flow toilets. Hundreds of species of animals and insects live on the land, including birds, deer, butterflies, and dragonflies. Plants, too, thrive here, and more than 350 species reside at Spring Creek. Wildflowers, distinctive trees and shrubs, moss, wetland plants, and milkweed all thrive on the site. Many buildings on the Center’s land are available for rental use. Deposits and advance reservations are required. A regular schedule of classes, as well as an updated roster of wildlife and birds currently in view, are available at the Center’s website. Admission is free on Tuesday.
