1. Golf Club At Fernley

City: Fernley, NV
Category: Golf
Telephone: (775) 835-6933
Address: 4000 Farm District Road

Description: This 18-hole bent-grass course, opened in 1996, is located in Fernley, Nevada, about 35 miles east of Sparks. It was built among the sagebrush of the high desert, but just to add a little more of a challenge, designer Bob Bingham laced 30 lakes around the 18 holes. It plays easily, though, if you can control your shots. It’s almost a guarantee that errant shots will find water or the sagebrush. Most greens are moderately fast and protected by white-sand bunkers. The course plays fast and is never crowded during the week. The only drawback is the fact that during summer, temperatures in Fernley can reach or even exceed the 100-degree mark. The course features a 605-yard par 5 that doglegs around the sagebrush and a lake. The signature hole is a short par 3 called “The Hanging Tree,” which features water in the front and the back and a 100-year-old cottonwood tree looming next to the green. The course is wide open with only a few trees, so when the wind kicks up, usually during the afternoon, it can wreak havoc with your game. Yardage: 6,085 Par: 72 USGA rating: 68 Slope: 120 Greens fees: $25 to $40 Reservations: 7 days in advance

Description: Reno-Fernley Raceway’s oval is called the “Racing Field of Dreams” and is located about 36 miles from Reno. Boasting 15 configurations and more than 30 turns, this 4-mile-plus facility has it all: clay oval racing, motocross tracks, off-road racing, sand drags, BMX, and go-kart racing. Usually oval track racing is presented every Saturday during the summer months, with racing action in IMCA & Outlaw modifieds, street stocks, hobby stocks, modified minis, and pure stock minis. Admission ranges from $5 to $15. The track also offers a special pit pass for $10 to $20. Although this roadcourse appeals to hardcore racing fans of all types, it has much broader appeal with its special events such as Hot August Nights Street Drags and the Annual Reno Historic Races. You might never make it to Indy, but you can see many of the same cars burning up the track here when high-profile racing teams arrive from all over the country with their historic multimillion-dollar race cars. The historic races allow spectators to see well-known cars and drivers up close and personal in a visitor-friendly raceway. Call the track or check its Web site for a detailed schedule and prices of events. Overnight campers are welcome. To help keep kids amused throughout the race day, Herbie’s Paintball Games is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. For information go to www.herbiespaintball.com or call (775) 575-6946. To get to the raceway, take I–80 east from Reno to exit 46 (West Fernley). Follow Main Street until the intersection of Alternate US 95. Take Alternate US 95 about 6 miles until you see the signs for the raceway on the right-hand side of the highway.
