Description: The Douglas County School District (DCSD) is responsible for three schools on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe on the Nevada side. The district’s administrative offices are located over the mountains in the tiny Nevada town of Minden, so at times students, teachers, and parents feel isolated from the rest of the school district, especially during the snow season. The district maintains a high school, middle school, and one elementary school in Zephyr Cove, Nevada, along with 10 schools in the Carson Valley. To enroll a student in the county’s schools at the lake, proceed to your school with the following documentation: your child’s immunization record, proof of residency, and proof of the child’s identity. A utility bill, a rental agreement, or a mortgage contract is acceptable as proof of residency. For child identification a birth certificate, a passport, or a baptismal certificate is sufficient. Another helpful document is a student’s most recent report card to help place the student in the proper class or classes. The DCSD provides bus service for K–12 if a student lives 2 miles or farther from his or her school. Nevada law requires that every child between the ages of 7 and 17 attend school. Kindergarten is not mandatory, but a student who does not attend kindergarten must be tested before entering the first grade.
