Description: Just 10 miles west of Reno on Interstate 80, Crystal Peak Golf Course is the newest to join the growing ranks of links in the Reno/Tahoe area. Created by Love Golf Design, it boasts several distinctions: It’s the only championship nine-hole course in the Reno/Sparks area and the only course that uses an island in the Truckee River. The island houses the green for the second hole along with the par 3 third hole. Meandering through a spectacular forest of Jeffrey pines, the course takes full advantage of its mile of riverfront property. A nature lover’s delight, it also challenges even the best golfers with its demand for accuracy. The interesting array of bunkers and the fairways lined with tall trees and sagebrush demand thoughtful shots in order to score well. It’s a family-owned enterprise, so don’t expect the glitz of full-service courses with restaurants and pro shops. Playing a round of golf here is also communing with nature. Description: Horseback riding is an old tradition on the east side of the Sierra Nevada, and at Verdi Trails, the wranglers help keep this tradition alive. This outfit caters to families but suggests that the younger riders be at least six years old unless they are experienced. This stable is located at the foot of the mountains, and the rides provide outstanding scenery. Verdi Trails specializes in trail rides, but this is a full-service equestrian center that also offers hayrides, barbecues, and other fun services. The stables open at 9:00 a.m. and close at sunset. The stables are located off I–80 west of Boomtown.
