1. International Camel Races

City: Virginia City, NV
Category: Annual Events & Festivals
Telephone: (775) 847-4386, (800) 718-7587

Description: This wild and crazy time began in 1960, when Hollywood director John Huston won the first race on a borrowed camel. The yearly event, held in mid-September, turned into an international event when the Australians jumped into the fray in 1987. The races are all in fun and have even included ostriches and water buffalo sprints. Other humorous events include a parade down C Street with the town’s legal prostitutes dressed in 1880s fashions. Virginia City comes alive once again during this unforgettable weekend: a fun time for the entire family. An entrance fee, usually $10, is charged for the actual camel races. (See the Day Trips chapter for more on Virginia City and on the origin of the Camel Races.)
