2. Zephyr Cove Marina

City: Zephyr Cove, NV
Category: Parks & Recreation
Telephone: (775) 589-4901

Description: You can find all kinds of watercraft on Lake Tahoe. At last count, about 25 water-sports rental businesses encircle the lake, where you can rent just about anything that floats. Although you’ll see boats on the lake almost all year, water-sports rentals are seasonal, with most of these establishments operating during summer and early fall only. Sailing the translucent water of Lake Tahoe has been a longtime recreational activity, and when the wind kicks up in the afternoon, you’ll see why. Sailboarding has also become a popular sport on the lake, and every afternoon brave souls can be seen whipping over the waves, seemingly hanging on for their lives. And if powerboats are more to your liking, speedboat rentals are available for the novice to the advanced boater. Prices for the rentals seem to change every season and are dependent on the size of the watercraft, the time of the year, and the time of day. Generally, hourly rental rates are close to these prices: powerboats, $125 to $200; sailboats, $40 to $60; pedal boats, $20; fishing and pontoon boats, $35 to $60; canoes and kayaks, $20 to $30; Jet Skis and WaveRunners, $100 to $125; and water-ski tows, $40 to $50.

4. Zephyr Cove Stables

City: Zephyr Cove, NV
Category: Parks & Recreation
Telephone: (775) 588-5664

Description: Kayaking is wonderful fun and very easy to learn, but if you’ve never been in a kayak before, I recommend taking a guided tour on which you can learn the basics. Hugging the shoreline of Lake Tahoe, guided tours for first-timers provide a good introduction to the sport without the rough water sometimes found in rivers. If you’re an experienced paddler, however, you can rent a kayak and do your own thing, either on the lake or in nearby rivers. It’s important to follow safety instructions, whichever way you choose, and to remember that the water of Lake Tahoe is beautiful but can be deadly if you tip over and can’t right yourself. More experienced kayakers should drop their crafts into the Truckee River Whitewater Park in downtown Reno, where river runners can test their skill on its 11 drop pools year-round. See the Annual Events chapter for more information about the Reno River Festival, which showcases slalom racing on this course.
