Description: Built in 1826, the Fire Island Lighthouse is one of the handful of extremely popular lighthouses on Long Island that thousands of tourists visit each year. This one was built to guide ships into New York Harbor. It now has an automated beacon that shines brightly some 74 feet above sea level. Tours of the lighthouse are available Apr to mid-Dec. Plus, guests are welcome to climb the 192 steps to the observation deck at the top. Hours of operation vary by season, but from July 1 to Labor Day, they are 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
