Description: For more than 50 years young individuals have come to Kings Point to acquire the knowledge, experience, discipline, and skills that strong leadership demands. Graduates of the Merchant Marine Academy go on to serve their country by pursuing highly successful careers in the maritime industry and the armed services. Many students, however, wind up continuing their studies in graduate or professional schools, and some have even become outstanding government and business leaders. Every year the academy selects just 275 young men and women for entry into the “plebe class.” These students come from across America and from all walks of life. The academy encourages diversity and welcomes people of all races, colors, creeds, and ethnic backgrounds to apply for admission.Thousands upon thousands of ships and tankers, owned by U.S. companies and registered and operated under the American flag, are operated by active members of the U.S. Merchant Marine. In times of war or national emergency, the Merchant Marine becomes vital to national security. It represents a “fourth arm of defense.” U.S. merchant ships are responsible for delivering military supplies overseas to our forces and allies.

Description: Closed in July and on holidays and weekends during semester breaks, this museum features 14 galleries that trace the evolution of American shipping since the Civil War. Here you’ll find a handful of maritime artifacts, along with an impressive collection of model ships and maritime artwork. There’s also a memorial dedicated to the merchant marines who have lost their lives in the line of duty while serving their country.

Description: Housed within the campus of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, this museum features 14 galleries that showcase the evolution of American shipping since the Civil War. On display here are a wide range of scale ship models and nautical artifacts, along with marine-related artwork that tell the story of how the U.S. Merchant Marine has contributed and continues to contribute to America’s entire shipping industry, as well as to the military.A few of the artifacts on permanent display here include the ship’s wheel from the USS Constitution, a collection of ancient navigational tools used aboard ships prior to the computer and digital age, a collection of fine china used aboard famous ships, and the Japanese surrender sword from World War II that was given to the museum by General Douglas MacArthur. There’s also a display created in memory of the 142 U.S. Merchant Marine Academy cadets who died in the line of duty during World War II. The museum is closed in July, on holidays, and on weekends during semester breaks.
