City: Astoria, OR

Description: The three-day Fisher Poets Gathering is a get together of salty seafarers who recite their lyrics at places like the Wet Dog Cafe in downtown Astoria. This working person’s poetry revival entices anglers from up and down the West Coast from California to Alaska to recite stories about their experiences at sea. Jon Broderick, a one-time commercial fisherman turned high school teacher in Astoria, started this event in an effort to preserve the seafarer’s verse, which is much like cowboy poetry. The gathering features 15 hours of readings and various workshops on history, photography, and poetry about life at sea. One of the favorite events at this gathering is the limerick contest, where contestants write passages under the clock. Call ahead for specific times and locations.
