3. Round Barn And Farm Market

City: Biglerville, PA
Category: Shopping
Telephone: (717) 334-1984
Address: 298 Cashtown Road

Description: The historic Round Barn, located 8 miles west of Gettysburg, was built in 1914. It’s one of only three round barns, also called barrel barns, left in Pennsylvania, and it’s owned by Knouse Fruitlands, Inc., which is owned and operated by the Knouse family. The family bought the barn in 1985 and opened the market in 1993 for two weeks during the National Apple Harvest Festival (see the Annual Events and Festivals chapter). Those two weeks were so successful they decided to open the barn for the next year’s season, and it’s been operating every year since on a daily basis from May through October. The Round Barn offers one of the largest selections of apple varieties throughout the season, and whatever produce is in season is sure to be on sale here, as well as crafts, clothing with Red Barn logos, jams, jellies, preserves, candy, fudge, and more. The barn itself is an attraction; its circumference is 282 feet, with a diameter of more than 87 feet. It was constructed around a central silo measuring 60 feet high and 12 feet wide, with a storage capacity of 145 tons of silage. The silo is the hub, with 38 spokes that form the interior structure and support for the second floor. All but one of the spokes are single lengths of wood—each nearly 37 feet long. As originally constructed, the barn could house 50 head of cattle and about 16 horses or mules. After you check out the wide selection of goods on the first floor, climb the narrow steps to the second floor. When you enter, go ahead and look up, and up, in awe at the magnificent construction—everyone does. To reach the Round Barn, head out of town on Chambersburg Road (US 30 West), make a right onto Cashtown Road, and follow the signs for Round Barn. The barn is less than 0.5 mile from the turn onto Cashtown Road.

4. Hauser Estate Winery

City: Biglerville, PA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (717) 334-4888
Address: 410 Cashtown Road

Description: This is the newest winery in the area, and it’s locally owned and operated by the Hauser family. Since the family owns 500 acres of orchards, it probably was only a matter of time before they ventured into the wine-making business. The winery sits on a little more than 170 of those acres, and it overlooks miles of farmland, forest, and orchards as well as some of the roads the Confederates traveled on their way to Gettysburg back in July of 1863. You can admire the views as well as the wine produced here in their 360-degree glass-enclosed tasting room. Hauser Estate is located less than 10 miles from Lincoln Square. To reach it, head east on Chambersburg Road to Cashtown Road, and it will be on your left. There is also a satellite store at 17 Lincoln Square (see the Shopping chapter) for those who prefer not to drive to the winery. The winery, its in-town store, and the tasting room are open daily.

Opened in 1990, it’s housed in a restored pre–Civil War bank barn, and exhibits include a re-created 1880s farm kitchen and General Store and collections of farming implements, apple peelers, and fruit labels. The museum is open weekends only May through October, and a tour is available. There’s also a museum gift shop, with most items having an agricultural or orchard-related theme. To reach the museum from Lincoln Square, take Route 34 (Carlisle Street) north from Gettysburg until you reach Route 394 (West Hanover Street) in Biglerville.
