The building was the site of National Guard musters until 1966, and it was acquired by the city of Beaufort in 1990 for the continued purpose of preserving the town’s heritage and that of the surrounding Sea Islands. The decor and furnishings reflect those of the period from 1790 until 1825. The house was condemned in 1942, but public-spirited citizens spearheaded a drive to save the structure, and a restoration effort was begun in the fall of 1975. It was completed a year later.
