Description: A small gallery tucked away on the second level of the student union, the Ruddell is a pleasant space with some fine exhibitions. A wide variety of work circulates through this gallery, including artistry by young and old alike. Students have two shows each year, one for photography and one for other visual arts, and alumni also have an annual display. In addition, the Ruddell makes room for four or five other artists each year, with work in many media. In recent years the gallery has hosted the South Dakota Health Care Association’s Dakota Master Works exhibit, a touring show of work by artists age 60 and up. Toward the beginning of the schools’ second semester, the Ruddell puts on an educational program show that deals with social issues through art. The displays often coincide with speakers. Past shows have included topics such as threats to democracy (which displayed war art from 1960 to 1975) and abused women and children. Displays usually last about a month, and the gallery is open year-round during regular campus hours.
