Description: The mission of the Aging Commission is to serve as the focal point for aging services and as a liaison between senior citizens and the agencies and programs that serve them. It coordinates and funds community services that promote independence and choice for retirees age 60 and older. In partnership with other groups, the commission funds programs that provide housekeeping assistance, legal advice, and Alzheimer’s day-care services as well as a retired senior volunteer program. The county mayor’s Office on Aging was recently merged with the Aging Commission, so this office now helps senior citizens with Medicare/Medicaid and social security, taking care of dental needs, counseling and other issues. It continues to publish the Senior Info Handbook. Updated yearly, this valuable tool has a wealth of information on everything from a complete listing of available services to the warning signs of serious illnesses and advice on protecting oneself from fraud. There’s also an information and assistance hotline (901-324-3399).
