Description: The Hermitage Golf Course has two 18-hole courses—the General’s Retreat and the newer President’s Reserve. The General’s Retreat is an 18-hole, par 72 course. It measures 6,011 yards. It’s mostly a flat, open course with some elevated greens. The bent grass greens are large and undulating. Fairways are Bermuda grass in summer and rye the rest of the year. Six lakes come into play on the course, which lies along the Cumberland River. Hermitage, which is noted for its driving range and putting green, also has a snack bar, pro shop, and PGA instructors. It specializes in golf outings. Fees are $49 Mon through Thurs, $59 Fri through Sun and holidays. You can reserve your tee time up to 5 days in advance by phone or up to 90 days in advance at the website.The President’s Reserve, opened in the spring of 2000, shares the same pro shop and other facilities. President’s Reserve, also a par 72, features 6 sets of tees, with a distance of about 6,000 yards from the white ones. The course is built around a huge natural-wetland area with a slough running down its middle. Six holes are on the Cumberland River. Fees for President’s Reserve are $61 Mon through Thurs and $71 Fri through Sun. If you play a lot, you may want to ask about the frequent player program.

2. Riverside Golf Course

Description: Riverside Golf Course on the Cumberland River features a 9-hole and an 18-hole course. The 1,558-yard, 9-hole executive course is mostly par 3s, with a couple of par 4s. It’s a good choice for beginners and good practice for your irons. The 18-hole par 70 course is 5,465 yards. It’s flat, and water comes into play on about half the holes. Riverside has a lighted driving range, a 150-yard grass tee, PGA instructors, a snack bar, and pro shop. Fees for the 18-hole course are $25 weekdays and $30 weekends and holidays.

3. Old Hickory Yacht Club & Marina

Description: Old Hickory Marina has a public access boat ramp, private and transit docking, an eating area with concessions (they’re known for their chili dogs), gas, bait, and restrooms.

4. Lakewood Theatre Company Inc.

Description: Lakewood Theatre Company is a community theater group that maintains its own venue in a historic former bakery just down the street from Andrew Jackson’s home, the Hermitage. The building is one of Davidson County’s oldest and was renovated by the company in 1983. The company, begun for children in the community, continues to offer a summer children’s workshop. It also continues to offer a variety of productions. Past shows include Cole Porter’s Anything Goes, Neil Simon’s The Star Spangled Girl, and the timeless kids’ classic, The Boxcar Children. Most productions run for 3 weekends, except for musicals, which run for 4. Plays are at 7:30 p.m. Fri and Sat nights and 2:30 p.m. Sun. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors. Season tickets are available at $50 for adults, $45 for students and senior citizens. Reservations are strongly suggested.
