Description: Since 1930, this big, redbrick hospital just south of downtown has been the go-to place for having babies, undergoing joint surgery, getting stitches from a skateboard fall, and treating cancer, heart, and other major health problems. The hospital, now part of the 14-hospital Texas Health Care, has more than 710 beds and is served by more than 800 doctors. In addition, there is a Harris branch in southwest Fort Worth, Hurst-Euless-Bedford, and Azle. The Harris Fort Worth hospital has its share of awards: It was named a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence by HealthGrades, a Colorado-based rating company. In addition, the hospital’s green initiatives, which included reducing energy consumption and transforming the hospital’s waste management practices, won it the 2008 Environmental Awareness Award in the corporate/business category by the League of Women Voters of Texas Education Fund.
