Description: The late newspaper publisher for whom the museum is named spent years collecting paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell and was a fan of all American art. These treasures live in a modern building designed by Philip Johnson, opened in 1961 and expanded recently to accommodate a growing inventory. Mr. Carter didn’t live to see the final product, but its magnificent design was described in one book, 150 Years of American Art: The Amon Carter Museum Collection, as “a simple, elegant design that combined the warmth and richness of bronze with the creamy, intricately patterned surface of native Texas shellstone.” You’ll find work by Eliot Porter, Georgia O’Keeffe, and others noted for creations throughout American history. Admission to the permanent collection is free but there will be a fee for special attractions. The gift shop is excellent.
