Description: Texans know Jim’s, but they may not be familiar with the success story that lies behind this popular chain of family restaurants. Jim Hasslocher began his entrepreneurial endeavors by renting bikes and selling watermelon slices in Brackenridge Park in 1947. A few years later, he opened the Frontier Drive-­In, with carhops dressed like cowgirls.Today the cowboy remains on the Jim’s Restaurant logo, one that’s seen in 15 locations in San Antonio alone. Started in 1963, the popular chain serves excellent breakfasts—everything from traditional eggs and bacon to an array of waffles—as well as lunch and dinner. Most of the locations are open around the clock and appeal to travelers as well as families and shift workers.After Jim’s took off, Jim Hasslocher branched out, opening other San Antonio eateries. The Magic Time Machine Restaurant, popular with kids of all ages, was founded by Hasslocher, past president of the National Restaurant Association. The entrepreneur also started the Biloxi Belle Casino Resort.
