Description: Call it soul food or call it food like your grandmother used to cook, but you will definitely call it good. Mr. and Mrs. G’s is a plain-­Jane establishment that pours all its effort into the comfort food served there. All-­time favorites include fried pork chops, smothered steak, and fried chicken, although the meat loaf and pot roast are delicious, too. The side dishes range from greens to fried okra to sweet potatoes, and the desserts are legendary. Most popular are the peach cobbler and the banana pudding. Service is cafeteria style, and the clientele includes servicemen and -women, neighborhood locals, and businesspeople from all over. Located in a sprawling old house, Mr. and Mrs. G’s has been around for almost 20 years, and patrons hope it will go on forever. Less than $10 will buy you a heaping plate with two meats, two side dishes, bread, iced tea, and dessert. There’s no better deal anywhere. The Garners serve their food from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays only.
