Description: This department offers five services: a comprehensive nutrition program, supportive services for the elderly, a city homemaker program, a client-­managed program, and a personal-­attendant services program. Funded by the City of San Antonio General Fund, the Alamo Area Council of Governments, the Texas Department of Human Resources, and the Texas Rehabilitation Commission, the agency works to better the lives of elderly and disabled persons in Bexar County. The Comprehensive Nutrition Program is available to citizens age 60 and older. Meals are served in a group setting to offer participants the opportunity to socialize. The program also offers transportation, recreation, health screenings, shopping assistance, and health and welfare counseling.The Supportive Services for the Elderly Program offers door-­to-­door transportation for citizens age 60 and older to medical appointments, Social Security offices, food-­stamp offices, and legal appointments as well as to the grocery store and bank. The service is free.The Client-­Managed Program provides assistance to adults who are permanently disabled. Along with personal care, the program offers meal preparation, home management, grocery shopping, companionship, and more. The Personal-­Attendant Service is similar but is designed for disabled persons who are employed. The City Homemaker Program assists elderly citizens at home and also provides in-­home attendant care.
