4. Retama Park

City: Selma, TX
Category: Spectator Sports
Telephone: (210) 651-7000
Address: 1 Retama Pkwy.

Description: During the summer and fall, the thoroughbred racing season at Retama Park offers the thrill of live horse racing and the chance to win big at the betting window. Opened in 1995, Retama is located a few miles northeast of downtown, just off I-35. It’s a handsome, impressive structure with comfortable seating for up to 20,000 spectators among several levels, including outside and enclosed-seating areas. The lower level includes good views of the action on the track as well as a food court. The grandstand level also has a food court as well as a large off-track simulcasting area where fans may watch and wager on races being run elsewhere in the US. The clubhouse level is fully enclosed and air-conditioned and offers several dining options, including the Terrace Dining Room, the Sports Bar, and the members-only Player’s Club. Up one floor, the Press Box level is the site of the luxurious Turf and Field Club as well as suites for race announcers and judges and, as the name indicates, the racing press. Races are generally held Thurs through Sun. Although the live racing season is limited, the park is open every day for simulcast viewing and wagering. Call for specific dates and times.Retama tries hard to be a family-friendly facility where parents will feel good about taking their kids for an evening’s entertainment. Several special-event nights are scheduled during each racing season, often offering discounted prices on food and drink and activities such as pony rides and face painting for the children. The park does manage to project a more or less wholesome atmosphere, at least when there’s live racing. It is quite a spectacle to see several thousand pounds of muscular animal churning around the turns and to sense the excitement of the horses and their riders. Even without the wagering, Retama can be a good bet for a fun outing.
