Description: You will enjoy the section of the historic plantation trail (Route 5 west from Williamsburg) that leads through forests past this superb Gothic Revival house (ca. 1849) in Charles City County. With only a minimum of imagination, you might envision Edgar Allan Poe passing in a carriage in the other direction. (Indeed, the house is reputed to have a ghost in residence!) In a countryside filled with the formalities of Georgian and Colonial Revival architecture, this is a truly refreshing structure. Today the plantation is operated as an opulent bed-and-breakfast inn. Even if you choose not to go in, you will see it clearly from the highway. Edgewood arranges group tours with advance notice of at least a week or two. Luncheon and candlelight tours are the most popular. Check the home’s Web site for details.
