Description: Shakespeare in the Park? Try Shakespeare in the Woods. In 1978, a group of theater nuts had the idea to put together an outdoor performance venue. Not far from Spring Green, just a 40-mile drive west of Madison, they found the perfect location. Appropriately, the first production, staged in July 1980 was Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. APT has been a success ever since, even garnering a Tony nomination. The season begins in late spring and continues to the fall. Productions emphasize the classics with a special nod toward the Bard. Just over 1,100 seats are available “up the hill” and tickets may go fast for certain performances, especially on weekends. In 2009, APT opened the Touchstone Theatre, a 200-seat indoor venue which offers productions with a more intimate focus. Traditionally, playgoers arrive early for a picnic just outside the gate. Complimentary mosquito spray is available inside for when the bugs are biting. A day in advance theatergoers can order food via the APT Web site from Hubbard Avenue Diner in Middleton. These prepared meals are delivered to the theater. Spring Green’s Furthermore Brewing serves Proper, a beer specially brewed for APT. The facility is wheelchair accessible but with a hill to climb.
