1. Athens Gyros

City: Waunakee, WI
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (608) 249-6720
Address: 5420 Willow Rd.

Description: Located inside a Shell Station off County M just west of WI 113/Northport Road, this little Greek eatery has one of the best gyros in town. It may be in a gas station but it is not the usual microwaved schlock from the freezer. This is the home-style cooking of Gus and Angela Kyriakopoulos. For a long time, Gus managed Parthenon Gyros on State Street. In addition to gyros, the menu offers chicken and pork (souvlaki) and a spinach/feta option (spanakopita), as well as salads and desserts such as baklava. American alternatives such as burgers, grilled cheese, and chicken tenders should satisfy members of the dinner party not partial to Greek fare. Don’t expect ambience; most business is carry-out, and decor includes racks of junk food and coolers of drinks and convenience items. If you are fishing the Yahara River nearby or on the way to Governor Nelson State Park, this is a good place for picnic food. Alcohol is served. Wheelchair accessible. Open daily.
