  • “Historic Riverport, to the Southwest”, “Baghdad on the Bayou”, “Queen of the Cypress”; all the aforementioned names aptly fit this small, yet magical place. Nestled between two lakes – Caddo Lake to the East and Lake O’the Pines to the West, Big Cypress Bayou runs lazily through the city and is the main focal point of Jefferson’s colorful and storied past. When once a thriving river port, beginning around 1845, cargo was shipped from the Port of New Orleans into the Port of Jefferson. Offloaded, goods were transported by wagon to all points beyond as well as goods brought and shipped to New Orleans. Jefferson enjoyed newfound wealth and prosperity for approximately 30 years. When the railroads came through (curse of Jay Gould), and a logjam on the Red River destroyed, a decline in the river’s water level ensued. The city suffered from the loss of steamboat trading. Jefferson “slept” for approximately 100 years and remains virtually unchanged since the days of the steamboats. The fine and stately antebellum homes, and buildings still remain. The Carriage House is a beautiful historic Greek Revival style home located in the heart of Jefferson, Texas. Park your car and walk to all of the sites, shops and restaurants in the riverfront district. The Carriage House Bed and Breakfast features an inviting wrap around porch and a comfortable garden courtyard. Come sit by the fire pit on a crisp winter night and enjoy homemade smores or drink your morning coffee in one of the rocking chairs or the porch swing on the front porch. Our guests love our gourmet breakfast served on weekends and the continental breakfast served on weekdays. We also offer homemade snacks on weekend afternoons. The stories, legends, and lore abound as visitors make their way to this quiet, yet popular community for a myriad of reasons. Among skyscrapers, busy highways and traffic jams, Jefferson remains an oasis for the weary traveler seeking solace for the soul and peace of the spirit. Brick streets caress our downtown where visitors stroll at a leisurely pace. Antiques; a myriad of bed & breakfasts; two historic hotels; riverboat rides along the Big Cypress Bayou; the Jefferson Historical Museum, formerly the U.S. Post Office and Court of Appeals, houses four floors of historical artifacts as well as an antique gun collection and art gallery; Jay Gould’s private rail car; steam train; Gone With the Wind Museum; and more one must be present to see. The Carriage House has seven unique and comfortable rooms. Please visit our website at www.carriagehousejefferson.com to make a reservation.
