  • Description:
  • A historic motion picture and stage theatre. Built in late 1920 and opened on Feb. 1st 1921 as the Lyric Theatre for movies and vaudeville. Remodeled and redecorated in 1933 in the art deco style and renamed the Roxy Theatre. Vaudeville was discontinued in the spring of 1934 and a policy of straight motion picture exhibition was carried forth from that time with occasional live attractions. The current management took over ownership in 1970 and re-established a policy of live stage attractions and motion picture presentation that continues to the present time. The theatre has played host to hundreds of concerts, plays and dance recitals as well as weddings, birthday parties, and community programs, and has been used for the filming of numerous TV commercials, TV shows and has appeared in 2 motion pictures. The theatre has been featured in many newspaper and magazine articles about historic theatres, theatre restoration, and management style as well as TV news appearances and internet blogs and websites. Of the hundreds of live acts that have appeared on the Roxy stage, the most notable would have to be Billy Joel who had his first ever headlining concert here on Nov. 28th 1973. Mr. Joel continues to speak fondly of his Roxy appearance even to this day, and has credited the theatre as having been the turning point of his career. A few of the other notable acts to have appeared here were Bruce Springsteen, Blood Sweat and Tears, KISS, Melissa Manchester, Martin Mull, AC/DC, John Belushi and Gilda Radner. The theatre continues to operate as a 2nd run discount motion picture theatre with an admission price of just $3.00 for all seats at all times. While most small town theatres have vanished from the scene the Roxy continues to be one of the most successful single screen theatres in America. We attribute the success of the theatre to the fact that it has been restored to it's original architectural splendor and is operated just as it had when first opened in 1933 with a uniformed staff, operational stage curtains, and period lighting, while at the same time presenting current motion pictures with the most up to date state of the art film and sound technologies. The Roxy is a place where the public can enjoy motion picture and stage attractions in a comfortable, attractive and professional theatrical atmosphere at very affordable prices with convenient free parking in a safe and restful environment.
