The diverse children and youth of LYC enjoy numerous opportunities: performing in exceptional venues, touring national and international cities and creating long-lasting community wide experiences and friendships. ***************************************************************************** • Currently accepting singers by audition in 4th-12th grades. • Actively recruiting K-3rd grade singers for new programming. • Actively seeking alumni/ae to reconnect. History The Louisville Youth Choir was founded in 1967 by Italio Taranta, a former Professor of Music and Choral Conductor at the University of Louisville School of Music, supported by Robert Whitney, former Dean of the University of Louisville School of Music and Melvin Dickinson, Conductor of the Louisville Bach Society. During its 40 years of service to the community, the Choir has flourished under the leadership of Michael Neely, Arnold Epley, Russell Freeman, Richard Lin, John Dickson, Carol Christell, Donna Thomasson, Frank Heller, III, Louie Bailey, Don Scott Carpenter and Thomas A. Seacat. Terri E. Foster was appointed Interim Artistic/Executive Director in 2007. In July of 2007 a new partnership was formed and The Louisville Youth Choir became Artists in Residence at the Ursuline School for the Performing Arts. The Louisville Youth Choir has been heard throughout Europe and North America including performances in the Dom in Salzburg (2006), Votivkirche in Vienna (2006), Carnegie Hall in New York City (2003), Santuario de Guadalupe in Santa Fe (2003) as well as Chicago (2004), Colorado Springs, CO (2003) and Windsor and Toronto, Ontario (2002). At home the choir has performed for the Kentucky Music Educators In-Service conference several times, partnered with Kentucky Opera in premieres of three operas based on the lives of Kentuckians Muhammad Ali, Helen Thomas and Dian Fosse, and premiered commissioned works by composers David J. Elliott, Bill Stevens, Paul Nahay, Frederick Speck, Frank Richmond, Patsy Ford Simms and in March of 2007, Daniel Gilliam. A member of the Greater Louisville Fund for the Arts, the Louisville Youth Choir has had numerous opportunities to perform with the area’s finest arts organizations. The choir has performed Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the Louisville Orchestra, Puccini’s Tosca with the Kentucky Opera, Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Louisville Ballet and the Beethoven Choral Fantasy with the Louisville Youth Orchestra. The choir has also partnered with the Louisville Bach Society and the Broadway Series. Now in its forty-first consecutive season, the organization is home to three ensembles: Chorale, Les Chambres and Kantorei. As a community based organization, LYC draws children and youth from throughout metropolitan Louisville. Its repertoire includes music of many styles and cultures, including major classic and modern works with orchestra and soloists. LYC offers a choral music experience unique in the region. LYC is governed by a Board of Directors composed of parents, area musicians, community business leaders and other individuals committed to the success of young people. Supported by the Greater Louisville Fund for the Arts, Yum! Brands, Inc, The Kentucky Arts Council, Metro Louisville Government and an individual/corporate subscriber program, the Choir continues its dedication to young singers in their development of distinguished musical experiences and lasting community-wide friendships. Recent Programmatic Highlights Include: • Presentation of Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy as a part of the first Gheens Great Expectations Young Artist Series with Euntake Kim, piano, The Louisville Youth Orchestra and the Louisville Youth Choir • World Premiere performance of Muhammad Ali: Outside the Ring with KENTUCKY OPERA • The Louisville Children’s Choir’s performance at the Heritage Festival in Chicago • The Louisville Children’s Choir’s performance in Carnegie Hall • The Louisville Youth Choir toured Canada • The Louisville Youth Choir toured the West, including a performance at the historical Santuario de Guadalupe in Santa Fe • The Louisville Youth Chamber Choir performed on WUOL’s Lunchtime Classics Series • The Louisville Youth Chamber Choir performed Bach’s Ershallet, ihr Lieder and Schubert’s Mass in C with members of the Louisville Symphony Collaborative Performances Include: • Requiem (Cherubini) and Spem in Alium (Tallis) with LOUISVILLE BACH SOCIETY • Elijah (Mendelssohn) with LOUISVILLE ORCHESTRA • The Nutcracker (Tchaikovsky) with LOUISVILLE BALLET • Tosca (Puccini) with KENTUCKY OPERA • Carmina Burana (Orff) with LOUISVILLE BALLET • Symphony VIII (Mahler) with LOUISVILLE ORCHESTRA • Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Lloyd Webber) with BROADWAY SERIES Other Special Events Include: • Benefit Concert for Hospice of Louisville and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) • Guest performance by Miss America, Heather French Henry • Guest Performance by Edith Davis Tidwell • Guest performance by Marilyn Mims • Premier performances of commissioned works by: David J. Elliott, Bill Stevens, Paul Nahay, Frederick Speck, Frank Yevrovich and Patsy Ford Simms • Guest performance by the Oberlin Choristers • Workshop and performance with Malcolm Dalglish • The Louisville Youth Chamber Choir and Children’s Choir performed for the Kentucky Music Educators In-service conference in 2005 • Kentuckiana Invitational: LYC hosted area choirs in performing major works in 2004 at Whitney Hall (The Kentucky Center) • Presenting concerts celebrating the anniversary of Mozart’s 250th birth with performances of the Mass in C Major (Coronation) and duets and trios from the opera literature • Celebrate LYC’s 40th Anniversary with a year-long concert schedule highlighting the choir and its former members; LYC will commission a new work as a part of its celebration Planned Future Events Include: • Guest performance with the Moscow Ballet production of The Nutcracker in November 2007 at The Louisville Palace Theatre
