Kansas has relatively old housing stock. According to a 2002 survey, about 22% of all housing units were built in 1939 or earlier and 49.6% were built between 1940 and 1979. The overwhelming majority (73%) were one-unit, detached structures and 69.6% were owner-occupied. The total number of housing units in 2002 was 1,159,276, of which 1,056,896 were occupied. Most units relied on utility gas and electricity for heating. It was estimated that 38,968 units lacked telephone service, 2,971 lacked complete plumbing facilities, and 3,733 lacked complete kitchen facilities. The average household size was 2.49 people.

In 2002, 12,983 privately owned units were authorized for construction. The median home value was $94,005. The median monthly cost for mortgage owners was $988. Renters paid a median of $545 per month. During 2002, Kansas received over $46.3 million in aid community planning and development aid from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
