Nevada had an installed electrical capacity (utility and nonutility) of 7 million kW in 1999; 32.8 billion kWh of power were produced in the same year. About half the electrical energy is sold in the state; the remainder is exported, principally to California. Hoover Dam, anchored in the bedrock of Black Canyon east of Las Vegas, is the state's largest hydroelectric installation, with an installed capacity of 1,039,000 kW in 1999. The first six of the dam's eight turbines came onstream during 1936–38, while the other two were added in 1944 and 1961. In 2002, total oil production was 2,000 barrels per day. In 2000 Nevada's total per capita energy consumption was 317 million Btu (79.9 million kcal), ranking it 34th among the 50 states.
