The leading wholesale lines by sales volume were farm-product raw materials, machinery, equipment, and supplies (especially farm machinery), groceries and related products, and petroleum and petroleum products. The state's 4,810 retail establishments recorded $6.4 billion in sales during 1997. Exports of North Dakota origin totaled $750 million in 1998, ranked 45th of all states.
