Grand Rapids: Municipal Government

Grand Rapids operates under a "weak mayor," commission-manager form of government, in which the seven council members—one of whom serves as mayor—are elected to four-year terms. The city manager, who runs the government, is appointed.

The Grand Valley Metro Council, formed in 1990, is a voluntary coalition of 31 units of government assigned to coordinate the region's services and investments which have environmental, economic and social impact.
