Commercial Street


The small town of Portola, CA is located about 150 miles northeast of Sacramento, 60 miles northwest of Lake Tahoe, and 50 miles northwest of Reno, Nevada. The old town area of Portola features many historic landmarks, buildings and a few museums.

Commercial Street is the main street of Old Town Portola where travelers can find many restaurants, unique shops, such as a quilt and a pottery shop, and the Pullman House, which is a railroad themed bed and breakfast. Just off Commercial Street is an observation area near the town caboose that overlooks the railroad yard.

The town's most famous monument is the Williams House located at the east entrance to Portola. Visitors can walk through the old log cabin and view the exhibits on the Williams' family as well as other items relating to railroad, mining and lumber activities of Portola's past.

There are several other nearby attractions that visitors can take part in. Lake Davis is a short drive north of Portola and offers camping, fishing, sailing, mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking. During winter, ice-fishing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are popular choices.

For those that wish to explore Portola at a leisurely pace, suggested activities are visiting the River Walk along Feather River, scenic drives through the Sierra Valley, bird watching.
