Tried and true, Hoover's Cooking is the "place to go" in the area just east of UT, for homestyle southern cooking, the kind you can't hardly find any more. Chicken fried steak, meatloaf, fried okra, mustard greens, cornbread, biscuits and gravy, fried ham steak, all the usual soul food standards, done to high standards. In addition they have Texas BBQ - pork ribs, hot sausage, jerk chicken, cowboy beans; and a selection of TexMex dishes; as well as unique sides, like jalapeno creamed spinach and Caribbean rice. Also sandwiches you don't see just everywhere, like Catfish PoBoy, and "Nawlins style Muffletta. The place has a down home feel, not fancy, and service is friendly, like in a small town cafe. The current offerings and specials are listed on a big board on the wall. Be sure to ask your server if you have questions, because they really want you to be pleased.
