Description: Many call this the best place to hike in Connecticut, and the claim is difficult to argue with. This large park was saved from development by citizen activists in the early 20th century, and gets its name from its unique appearance. Driving up I-91 you can see the mountain clearly looking like an enormous sleeping man. The network of trails is extensive and offers numerous styles and levels of hiking opportunities. If you’re looking for a gentle walk to the top of the mountain, the easy-graded Tower Trail is the most popular in the entire state, but, of course, that has drawbacks for those who want to find peace and quiet. For a challenge, hike from the parking lot down to the river, and then take the blue trail along the edge of the quarry up the “head” of the Giant. This precarious, steep trail has an amazing reward, the spectacular view from the “chin” cliff of New Haven and across the Sound to Long Island. If you can follow a trail map well, park on Chestnut Lane at the Giant’s “feet” and explore less-traveled trails. In the spring, walk along the purple trail and find a hidden seasonal waterfall.
