Description: Connecticut’s oldest winery was opened by Sherman Haight as soon as the Farm Winery Act was passed, making commercial winemaking legal in the state for the first time since Prohibition. It changed hands in 2008, and with 16 planted acres and 2,500 cases of wines produced annually, the tradition continues. Selections are varied, and the beautiful tasting room loft is located upstairs in a barn. Wines include Coverside, a white blend of Chardonnay and Seyval Blanc, and Riesling, which is light and semisweet. The Marechal Foch grape, one of many grown in the vineyard, is showcased in Nouveau Foch, a Beaujolais-style red that is light and fruity, and Picnic Red, which offers a little more bite. As the name implies, Big Red offers bold flavor to those who like full-bodied wines. With additional selections including apple wine blends and dessert wines, there’s something for everyone.
