Description: Formerly the summer estate of Edith Morton Chase, this gorgeous park features a network of trails and gravel roads through forest and fields, all surrounding one of the most fantastic houses in the state. There is a fine pond and a wildlife-viewing blind (unlike any other you’ve been to). Definitely take a tour of the strange Tudor-like house if you’re there June through Oct on the second and fourth weekends of each month from noon to 5 p.m. Check out the slate roof; they don’t make them like that anymore. This is a very pleasant place for a walk, like many of the estates in Great Britain where the public is allowed to walk freely. Make sure you leave before the posted gate-closing time; they are serious about that. The hilltop fields and frog-haunted pond just off Route 118 on the way to Litchfield are somehow missed by most casual travelers, despite the park’s proximity to the attractions nearby. Don’t be one of them.
