Description: The New York Times called this 54-acre retreat a “resort for the spirit,” and if you’re in need of a little rejuvenation, the Wisdom House Retreat Center is the place for it. Once an old farm, it was purchased in 1949 by the Daughters of Wisdom, an inclusive group of Catholic sisters, and is now an interfaith center that welcomes all women and men seeking their own spiritual health. Sanctuary areas for meditation, prayer, and creative thinking abound, like the classic labyrinth, and there’s even a swimming pool. Throughout the year you can sign up for a full program of different spiritual programs, lectures, interactive workshops, and retreats. This is also a frequent retreat for creative artists and writers, and they run a number of programs to that end. Wisdom House has overnight space for about 140 people, although unless the Dalai Lama is making an appearance, you’re unlikely to find that many visitors. This is a place for quiet reflection (you can even visit on “quiet days” when everyone speaks softly or not at all). Whatever your faith, we all need a little help on our spiritual journeys.
