Description: The major rail route through Connecticut parallels I-95 along the coast. The New Haven Line, operated by Metro North, runs the service between Grand Central Station in New York City and New Haven. With stations in virtually all townships along the I-95 corridor, the New Haven Line offers commuters respite from the often-clogged interstate. This line has branches that connect to New Canaan, Danbury, and Waterbury. Ridership is consistently increasing, with over 37 million travelers in 2010. As gas prices continue to linger in the minds of residents and commuters, no doubt those numbers will rise.New Haven’s Union Station is the main hub between the two Connecticut lines. Commuter Connection shuttles, buses, and taxi service are available outside the main entrance. Parking can be tricky, as the attached lot fills quickly, but additional parking is available at the Temple Street Garage or near Sargent Street, where shuttles to the station are available. If you’re picking someone up, coordinate your arrival time, as street parking is limited and the driveway directly in front of the station fills up quickly and is meant for quick drop-offs and pickups. Select Shore Line East and Metro North trains depart or arrive at the State Street Station, so check schedules. State Street Station is located just 2 blocks from New Haven Green, and free shuttles are available to Union Station.
