Description: It’s against the law to feed the squirrels, ducks, and other animals in many areas. We’re not trying to be spoilsports. Feeding wild animals hurts them—and sometimes comes back to hurt us. Feeding wild animals teaches them to rely on humans instead of their own natural hunting or gathering skills. We usually feed wild animals the wrong kind of food, and they develop a kind of malnutrition. Feeding animals sometimes results in the animal biting the hand that’s feeding it—literally. You can read about animal laws—both county ordinances and state laws—in Pinellas County at www.pinellascounty.org/animalservices/law.htm. Hillsborough County’s laws can be found at www.hillsboroughcounty.org/animalservices/ordinance. Note that these are the county offices for each area. Individual cities may have other requirements. Basically, however, most dogs, cats, and some other animal pets must have rabies vaccinations, be licensed, and be on a leash when outdoors.
