In this role, Memorial provides the region with several one-of-a-kind facilities and services, including the area’s only pediatric intensive care unit (part of the Backus Children’s Hospital), the only perinatal testing center, the only emergency helicopter service (LifeStarOne), the only ambulance specially equipped for sick newborns (Angel 3), and the only Level 1 trauma center, meaning the medical center offers extensive, immediate, round-the-clock services for emergency, life-threatening needs.Memorial’s Women’s Health Institute is one of only six perinatal centers in Georgia, and the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery is among only six in the state. The hospital’s Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute is southeast Georgia’s referral source for cancer treatment, and its Heart and Vascular Institute is the regional coordinator of comprehensive cardiovascular services. Memorial’s 50-acre campus is also the site of the Georgia Eye Institute, the Georgia Ear Institute, and the Rehabilitation Institute, which provides a comprehensive regimen of services for people recovering from illnesses and injuries.Memorial opened in 1955 as a 300-bed general hospital. As a regional referral center, it now ranks in size among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the United States and employs more than 4,000 people, with about 1,000 of those working for CareOne, Memorial’s home-care organization. CareOne brings home care to patients in 37 counties throughout southeastern Georgia and southern South Carolina, with its nurses providing services ranging from giving simple medications to highly technical care. Memorial is also a teaching hospital.
