Description: Originally designed as offices in 1895 by Daniel Burnham, John Root, and Charles Atwood (some guestroom doors still feature original mail slots), this National Historic Landmark was a forerunner of steel and glass skyscrapers to come. It was nearly lost to neglect but in 1999 it was lovingly restored and reborn as this beautiful 122-room hotel. Some of the original detailing, such as mosaic floors and marble ceilings, was refurbished, while other features were replicated to bring back the elegance of the original Chicago Style structure. Around the corner from State Street shopping, the hotel now envelops visitors in history and charm. Cozy rooms are plush with custom drapery, rich gold and blue hues, canopied beds, and endlessly appealing views of State Street, Lake Michigan, or the Loop. Feel free to bring your dog, but if you don’t, you can borrow a goldfish to keep you company. Kids’ packages include building blocks, coloring books, and cookies and milk. The hotel’s Atwood Cafe is a standout American restaurant, beloved for its brunch and its scrumptious chicken potpie.
