Description: It’s easy to miss this plantation house, the only one in New Orleans open to the public on a regular basis, because of the distractingly pretty scenery of nearby Bayou St. John. So double back and take a peek inside one of the few West Indies-style houses that lined the bayou in the 1700s—you won’t be disappointed. With its stucco-covered, brick-between-post construction and double-pitched hipped roof, the Pitot House was restored to its original 18th-century condition by the Louisiana Landmarks Society in the 1960s and is furnished with Louisiana and American antiques from the period. James Pitot, the first American mayor of New Orleans, bought the house in 1810. Within easy walking distance of the New Orleans Museum of Art in City Park, the house is open for tours Wed through Sat 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Last tour at 2 p.m.
