Description: The sparkling 1860 Melville Walker House, all porches and white clapboards, is the very picture of what an in-town New England bed-and-breakfast should look like. On the National Register of Historic Places, the graceful home is in a residential area filled with fine old homes, but it’s close enough to walk to Dock Square. There are six guest rooms inside, 11 suites tucked discreetly around to the side of the inn, and the owners recently opened the Artist’s Studio, another cottage. The rooms inside are very nice with details like Waverly wallpaper and French doors, and the occasional Jacuzzi, and they’re furnished with antiques. But the suites are knockouts with fireplaces, stuffed chairs, kitchenettes, and even whirlpools in some. They’re the ultimate in privacy—you can go over to the main inn for breakfast or have it delivered.
