Description: Trolleys have been a part of summer in the South Coast for ages, and this fine museum explores every aspect of them. This is the oldest and largest electric railway museum in the world, dating back to the 1930s, and it includes more than 225 vehicles. Favorites are the snow sweepers, like the 1920 Russell Car and snow sweeper with its big bristle brushes, and the ones from Maine, like the 12-seat, red, open-air car from Biddeford-Saco. Rides along a 4-mile loop happen regularly from 10 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., and they are noisy good fun. If you’re really into this sort of thing, consider the Be a Motorman program. Pony up $50 and you can drive one of these babies. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily in summer and on weekends only in May and September. At 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday in July and August, the museum conducts sunset and ice-cream trolley rides that are popular with families.
