Description: It stands to figure that Ogunquit would have a good art museum, as it earned a national reputation as an art colony a long time ago. But it’s still surprising that such a tiny town would have such a fine museum. Dedicated to 20th-century American art, the collection here includes more than 1,300 works by such talents as Marsden Hartley, Edward Hopper, and Walter Kuhn, and many other internationally famous artists. Built in the early 1950s due to the hard efforts of Ogunquit painter and scenester Henry Strater, it opened in 1953 and grew impressively thanks to a lot of donations by big-name artists. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame ocean views like living paintings, and they are as beautiful as anything on the walls. The museum hosts rotating exhibits and has lectures and workshops in the summer. Open from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday from July through October. Free for children 11 and under.
