Description: The legacy of Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center was born when a group of Dominican nuns arrived in Reno in 1877 to open a school for local children. The sisters soon learned that early Reno not only lacked educational structures but needed health-care facilities as well. To help address this need they built Sisters’ Hospital in 1908, which was the forerunner of Saint Mary’s. The medical center is part of Saint Mary’s Health Network, a large integrated delivery system encompassing 10 health care facilities, including Saint Mary’s Galena, Hospice of Northern Nevada, and Saint Mary’s Family Walk-in Health Center. The network consists of 800 physicians, 2,300 employees, and more than 300 volunteers. A recent $160 million expansion at the medical center doubled its size, adding office and parking space, emergency beds, and expanded services such as a wellness center along with critical care and rehabilitation services. Because Saint Mary’s is still operated by Catholic sisters, the spiritual well-being of patients is part of the healing process. The inpatient hospital rooms at the center are especially appealing, because all of them are spacious and private.
